This is a simplified version of John Barr's jumbo John fly pattern I've recently tied for a client. The major difference is this version omits the flash and resin wingcase. I've tied this in a few different colors, chartreuse, orange, pink, black and brown. I'm tying these in sizes 4 down to 10, but it would be fine tied down into smaller sizes as well.
Jumbo John Variant Fly Pattern Recipe
Hook: Mustad C67s #4-12
Bead: Brass or tungsten 4.8mm for #4
Weight: 0.020 lead
Thread: Black 8/0 70d
Tail hot spot: loon UV
Tail: Goose biots
Body: Brassie wire (1 or 2 colors)
Thorax: ice dubbing
Legs: Silicone flutter legs
Collar: Hen hackle
Brush on super glue and hard head cement
