Black Gnat

Here we will be tying the famous wet fly Black Gnat (BG). The BG is a great option for both stream and lake fishing and the fly catches both brown trout, arctic char rainbow and seatrout and more species. The BG is rather simple to tie and totally worth keeping a few in your box because there are times on the river and the lake when you see clouds of small black insects hovering over the water. Inevitably some of these insects will fall into the water and become part of the trouts diet. Use the BG when you see these swarms of bugs in the air and there is no sustained hatch going on. This the BG fly will both work out great as a small dry fly or like I tie it in this video, as a relatively large wet fly. Both are a great imitator for any dark insect. I fish those mostly in the size of: 12, 14, 16, 18 and have had great success here in Iceland with it. It's a must have in your box!

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
