Bob's Biography

Bob Petti is a fly fisherman and fly tyer from the Catskill Mountain region of New York. Like so many other fly tyers, he started his journey innocently. "All I wanted was the ability to tie the Royal Wulff, Elk Hair Caddis, Adams, and Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear. I didn't have much money and it wasn't easy to buy flies at the time. Heck I couldn't even afford a decent pair of waders back then, so I thought a small investment in tying flies would pay off in the long run." A couple decades later his one-shoe-box hobby has grown to a full blown identity. "I consider myself a fly tyer more so than a fly fisher, I guess. I don't get out to fish as much as I used to." When he does get out to fish, it's usually in one of the famous Catskill area trout rivers, usually the Beaverkill or the Esopus. His days of chasing every fish that swims are mostly gone, replaced by the desire to spend time in familiar stretches of beautiful rivers. "I have virtually no desire to travel to fish. My home is blessed with countless opportunities to explore waters for all sorts of game fish. I'd rather be gone at dawn and home by noon to spend time with my family than travel to the far side of the world to chase a fish."

His favorite flies to tie are wet flies and streamers, particularly the classic dressings, which leads to a weakness for fly tying pattern books, especially old ones. "I just scored a good copy of a Veniard classic. It's great fun to sit on the couch and flip through pattern books, noting down patterns I want to tie on a pad of paper". His tying room is littered with scraps of papers with lists of things to tie.

Bob was invited to join The Global Flyfisher as a partner in the winter of 1999-2000 and has authored nearly a hundred articles in the past dozen years on GFF and other sites. His flies have been featured in books by John Shewey and Paul Marriner.

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
