#4 Psychedelic Skunk - Don Ordes

Tied by: Don Ordes
Originated by: Don Ordes

Hook: Gaelic Supreme Mike Martinek 8xl #2
Thread: White 8/0
Tail: Silver pheasant crest
Body: Light gray floss
Rib: 2 strands fine silver oval tinsel
Belly: Lady Amherst pheasant tail
Throat: Silver pheasant breast hackles
Wing: 2 Whiting silver-laced hackle hackle flanked by slightly shorter silver-laced hackle hackle flanked by a shorter silver-laced hackle hackle
Horns: Lady Amherst pheasant tail
Topping: Silver pheasant crest
Shoulder: Elliot's pheasant rump feathers
Head: Black

Notes: This pattern was created by matching up hackles and cheeks from Wing Things. I had pairs of black/white lace hackle sized for 3 different size hooks, but they looked great when I staggered them. When I added color at any point, it just wasn't as striking as just black and white, so I left it that way. I looked at white polar bear for the belly fibers, but the black/white pheasant tail really balanced the fly well.

The flies are beautiful, but way beyond my abilities. I'll keep looking, though.

Beautiful tie, Don. Love those staggered lace hackles.

Thanks, Mike. Like most tying, I have found that staggered hackles need to be done to the correct proportions so it is pleasing to the eye. No formula needed, just sliding them back and forth until they tell me it's right. This is why I like the wing things, as I can do all three at once without tying them down, moving them back and forth until I am pleased with the overall look.

Mark,
Stick with it- we were all newbies at one time. There's no pressure here, so just relax and enjoy the learning experience- a little bit at a time. That teaches your mind to enjoy the learning experiences of all tying rather than it being intimidating. There's little enjoyment here by taking things too seriously.

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
