As a free-lance fly fishing journalist he has written articles for the "Fly Fishing Fly Tying Magazine”, the "Fliegenfischen" journal (Germany’s, Austria’s and Switzerland’s largest fly-fishing journal) and since 2007 he is also a contributor to the Global FlyFisher.

As a former college student to Australia and the United States, he fishes alpine waters throughout the world. His specialties however are the streams and rivers of southern Bavaria and Austria where he spends most of his free time.
His scientific curiosity motivates him to continuously test modern tackle materials and innovative designs in fly fishing.

“I am virtually field testing the whole year” laughs Tobias.
“I highly respect the traditional parts in our common passion, however no one today, in modern surgery for example, would even think about using the materials from two decades ago. Modern fly casting and fly tying is virtually the same and can surely still be further optimized in their performance with new material compounds.”
Together with his wife and his little daughter Nelli, Tobias lives in southern Germany near the city of Regensburg.

Thank you so much fo...

Thank you so much for these two great articles, Tobias. I think that your "liquid latex" Mayfly pattern, that you published in Flyfishing&Flytying is the best Mayfly I have ever used and your work here is also outstanding! Please continue to contribute to the globalflyfisher.com! For me and my friends you are amongst the best flyfishing experts worldwide.
Tight lines from the US! Steve

Dear Tobias, Than...

Dear Tobias,
Thank you for your answer.
It feels not to have expressed me with fluency, I made the translation of the text with an on-line program.

Thank you

Dear Candido, I am n...

Dear Candido, I am not entirely sure if I understood your question right, however I think you were asking for a selection of flies for your trip to Austria. Like in every alpine water you will certainly have to "match the hatch" and successful patterns change during the year. Generally speaking, I prefer good visible, high floatant dry fly patterns with some white or yellow polypropylen fibres tied in white waters. The patters that I particularly like because of their excellent floating quality under such conditions are Buck Caddis with a slightly larger muddler style head or dry flies with a mixed body of short cut CDC feathers and deer/elk hair. Have a look at my article "Carinthian Gold", you can find a picture of the mentioned flies there. During late summer, blue-winged olive emerger and CDC dun patterns are amongst my favorites in comparable waters in Austria. All the best and tight lines for your trip! Cheers, Tobias

Next summer I will travel to Austria, San Michael in Lungau, and he/she would want informs me if it is possible that type of flies advises me like I imagine, good expert of the fishing area and rivers of the Tyrol. I was already 7 years ago in this same place and you me dió very well, but it is always good to obtain information on the part of some fisherman of these rivers.

Thanking your attention and sending you a cordial greeting.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
